I am not a writer and I don’t pretend to be one. So it’s hard for me to write a blog on any kind of regular basis, hence, it’s been over two years! Yikes! But today’s tech world demands that artists have a virtual presence, so people can know what we’re currently creating, so I capitulate and have this website. And I try to have a blog: I do want people to understand where I come from when creating.
At this stage of my life I do what I feel like doing, mostly when I feel like doing it. I create what I feel like creating. I can be serious or I can be playful. This past year, 2023, I was mostly playful. I took a lot of classes from some wonderful artists, so I could add more techniques to my repertoire. I had so much fun! One of the classes I took was on dyeing my own fabric, and this class emboldened me to be more comfortable with unexpected results. Dyeing fabric isn’t always predictable, as there are so many variables. Thank you Jane Dunnewold, for sharing all your knowledge. Since that class increased my confidence about dyeing, I have taken up snow dyeing, experimenting on my own, with a few tips from Youtube videos.
With snow (or ice)dyeing, instead of submerging the fabric in water mixed with powered dye, the fabric is sprinkled with the powdered dye and then snow heaped on top. As the snow melts it disperses the dyes unevenly and the colors sort of bleed into one another where they meet. It’s somewhat like tie dyeing, remember that? Anyway, it’s all about experimenting with color, I love color and since I live in an area that gets snow, I might as well take advantage of Mother Nature!
I am a newbie at this technique but so far I am very happy with the results I am getting. Now I am waiting for the next snow fall! Below is some eye candy if you love color!
